Question Synopsis:
Renewing our FM3
Question:
We need to renew our FM3's from January of 07'. Can you please provide us with everything we need to get this done properly and efficiently. Thanks so much and hope to visit San Felipe soon.
Answer:
To renew your FM3, you need: - To have the appropriate amount of money in a bank account in Mexico (depending on whether you are single or a couple) and a letter from the bank indicating the money is there in the bank.
- A bill with your address on it or a letter from the development you have purchased property in indicating your address in Mexico.
- A passport.
- Your original FM3.
- The fees to renew the FM3.
- Forms to provide to immigration.

I have done all my visa paperwork at Yet Mail for the last 5 years and never have had a problem. Contact Yolanda to verify the above details and obtain exact amounts. Her email is yolandatafoya@hotmail.com and the phone in Mexico is 686-577-1253.

If you are not in San Felipe to pick up your FM3, they may actually be able to mail it to you for an extra cost.

Question Synopsis:
Driving from Palm Springs
Question:
The US media is full of stories of crime along the border. Is it generally safe (Safer then driving in LA)to drive from the border south of Palm Springs to San Felipe? Is it regularily traveled by US drivers?
Answer:
Driving from Palm Spring through Calexico to Mexicali and down to San Felipe is perfectly safe. I have done it many, many times as a single female and have never had a problem. Yes, it is regularly traveled by US drivers.
Question Date: 2008-12-30 16:04:28
Question Synopsis:
Why is it dangerous to drive at night or near the El Dorado?
Question:
You had mentioned in an answer that it was dangerous to drive at night and I was wondering why.
Answer:
It is dangerous to drive at night on Highway 5 for a few reasons:
- On the highway, there are no street lights illuminating the road, so it is easy to drive off the road accidentally
- Many locals have cars without lights and you can't see them until it is too late (I have 3 friends who live in San Felipe full time who have wrecked their cars by accidentally by turning in front of a car that had no lights and they could not see)
- They have been re-doing Highway 5 and it is difficult to tell what sections of the road you should be driving on
- Sometimes livestock wanders into the road and you can't see it until it is too late because there are no lights
- If you have had a few drinks, all of the above become more dangerous

So, I always try to stay close to what I want to be doing in the evening. If you are staying in the El Dorado Ranch/Playa de Oro area, you can be safer by going to Juanitos or Jimmy's Beach Bar and Gill for entertainment. If you are in town, try to be someplace you can walk to your entertainment. That is just my personal preference.

Question Synopsis:
North or South end - are they both as nice as each other?
Question:
Hi, Before I book accommodation I wanted to check whether one end of San Felipe is nicer than the other, particularly the beach. Can you please advise?
Answer:
I personally think that south of San Felipe the beaches are much prettier. However, there are not as many restaurants, bars, and stores. In the town center and north of San Felipe has more choices. If you are looking for night life, I would stay in the town center as it can be dangerous to drive at night or stay near the Playa de Oro/El Dorado Ranch area which has entertainment close by.

Question Synopsis:
Internet Service Provider
Question:
Do you know the name of the company that provides Internet service to homes in San Felipe? Do you know the approximate monthly cost?
Answer:
There are two good options for Internet service. Many people use HughesNet (www.hughesnet.com), which used to be called DirectWay. This is a good option if you are far away from town or don't have a phone line. You can ask about pricing and installation at the Computer store across the street from Fandango at the south part of town (near the Wash Tub laundry). I don't know if this is the phone number for that store, but (686) 557-2928 in San Felipe is listed as a number for a business doing computer and satellite installation. Or, you can buy it in the US and install it yourself in San Felipe.

Another option is DSL from the phone company. The phone company's number is (686) 577-1000, but I don't know if they have people who speak English. My friend says he pays about $40 a month for his DSL, which runs on his phone line. I don't know what it costs to put a phone line in. I think it used to be around $300 for a new house, but I don't know what it is now. If you are going to be putting in a phone line anyway, you might want to go with DSL.

Hi, I'm a college student and I'm looking for study abroad schools that I can attend in San Felipe, or around the that area or around Ensenada. Are there any colleges in San Felipe that offer study abroad (where I can get college credits, not just spanish immersion)? Or any other colleges you could recommend? Thanks!

Question Synopsis:
Camping or Inexpensive accommodation
Question:
hi i want to know where we can stay its family with little kids ... im not interested in the clubs i want a peaceful place so we can relax where can we stay??? we want to camp or rent some cheap "cabañas" can you help me with that????
Answer:
If you want to camp and have tents or a trailer or want to camp out of your car, Pete's Camp is away from town, but right on the water and has a restaurant, pay showers, and bathrooms. Club de Pesca and Kiki's are also right on the water and walking distance (about 1 mile) to town if you have tents or a trailer.

Camping can be noisy on event weekends, but is usually fairly quiet otherwise.

See more camping in our Yellow Pages here: San Felipe, Mexico Camping

There are bungalows about a block from the water here, but the last time I talked to them (about a year and a half ago) they were asking too much money for rent: http://chrissiesharborbungalows.com/Home_Page.php

El Capitan hotel is fairly inexpensive - usually $45 - $60 per night with Motel 6 quality, a pool and restaurant, and walking distance to beach
